In a touch of humor rarely seen from a founding member of the military-industrial complex, Lockheed Martin is changing its name and logo to Lockheed Martian for 24 hours to celebrate the landing of the Mars InSight spacecraft.
The latest Mars lander was designed, built and tested for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory by Lockheed Martin (er, Martian), according to Alex Walker, marketing lead for the company’s space division. In addition to the masthead of LockheedMartin.com, the temporarily revised logo will also show up on multiple screens in Times Square from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. this afternoon and on Lockheed Martin’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram channels.
Lockheed Martin has engineered spacecraft for every NASA mission to explore the surface of Mars over the past 40 years, but this is the first time the company has altered its logo to celebrate the event. The InSight mission aims to peer deep beneath the planet’s surface for the first time.
